Elder Law Attorney in Connecticut
As parents age, families face legal and financial questions that often come with urgency, uncertainty, and real emotional weight. How do we pay for long-term care? Who will make decisions if Mom can no longer decide for herself? Is there a way to protect the family home? What do we do now that Dad is in a nursing home and the money is running out?
I'm Aakash Sharma, and I help Connecticut families navigate these questions. My elder law practice focuses on three areas where planning — done well and done in time — makes a genuine difference for aging parents, the adult children who love them, and the spouses who are often quietly carrying the weight.

What Elder Law Is (and Isn't)
Elder law isn't a separate body of law so much as a focused approach to the legal issues that arise with aging — long-term care, capacity, benefits, and family dynamics at the intersection of all three. Good elder law work combines estate planning precision with practical knowledge of Connecticut's long-term care systems and experience with the Connecticut Probate Court.
Some of what elder law covers (and what my practice includes) is planning for nursing home care and Medicaid eligibility, establishing court-appointed conservatorships when an adult loses the capacity to manage their own affairs, and creating special needs trusts to protect inheritances for disabled loved ones.
Some of what elder law can cover — but what my practice does not handle — includes Social Security and SSI benefits appeals, and litigation over elder financial abuse or nursing home neglect. For those matters, I'm happy to refer you to attorneys in Connecticut who specialize in them.
My Elder Law Practice Areas
Medicaid Planning and Long-Term Care Connecticut nursing home care can cost $15,000 to $20,000 per month. Medicaid pays for long-term care for families who qualify — but the eligibility rules are strict, the five-year lookback is unforgiving, and well-meaning decisions can cause months of ineligibility. Whether you're planning years ahead or responding to a crisis, I can help. → Learn more about Medicaid Planning
Guardianship and Conservatorship When an adult family member can no longer safely manage their personal affairs or finances — due to dementia, serious illness, or disability — Connecticut's Probate Court can appoint a conservator to help. I represent family members who need to petition for conservatorship, and I also represent individuals who want to plan for future incapacity through voluntary conservatorship. → Learn more about Guardianship and Conservatorship
Special Needs Trusts and Planning For families with a child, grandchild, or other loved one with a disability, a properly drafted special needs trust allows you to leave an inheritance without disqualifying your loved one from means-tested benefits like Medicaid and SSI. This is specialized trust work that must be done carefully to avoid costly mistakes. → Learn more about Special Needs Planning
When to Call an Elder Law Attorney
Families most often reach out when:
- A parent's memory or capacity is slipping, and you're worried about what comes next
- A loved one has received a serious diagnosis that will eventually require long-term care
- A family member is already in a nursing home, and private funds are running low
- You have a child or grandchild with a disability and want to protect their future
- A parent can no longer manage their own affairs and refuses to accept help, and the family needs court-appointed authority to step in
- You are the adult child quietly realizing that you, too, need to plan for your own later years
The common thread is that elder law problems tend to get harder, more expensive, and more emotionally costly the longer they go unaddressed. Early planning almost always opens more doors. That said, even in a crisis, options usually exist — call and we'll talk through them.
Why This Practice
I'm a solo attorney, which means you work with me directly — not a rotating cast of paralegals or junior associates. My background combines a decade of transactional legal work with years of volunteer experience as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) working with vulnerable children in Connecticut's court system. That work shaped how I approach elder law — with attention to the person at the center, not just the paperwork around them.
I keep engagements flat-fee wherever possible, so you know what you're paying before we start. I'll tell you honestly when a simple plan is enough and when something more complex is genuinely needed.
